ESW Eurasia Editor Stanislav Krapivnik: Can MAGA Reindustrialize America with Tariffs Alone?
The Answer is Hell No! 04/05/2025

Stas Krapivnik has been a busy man this past week. ESW's Eurasia Editor, a former US Army officer raised by his Soviet émigré parents in the Carolinas, has seen firsthand the societal effects from a major American industry, in this case furniture-manufacturing (which had long been a part of the Greater Appalachia economy since Colonial times), getting gutted by cheap foreign competition.
We can all see the short term pain and chaos in the stock markets: the question before Americans is, will Trump's tariffs help or hinder Making America Great Again over the long haul?
Stas believes the answer is no, without a radical overhaul of:
Unsustainable debt burdens both private (student loans, credit cards and car loans plus inflated mortgage debt to pay high housing costs) and public (world's largest national debt and unfunded entitlements).
Unreliable power grids in California and other states, with brownouts driven in part by low-carbon emission alternative energy mandates
Job creation and manufacturer-crushing regulations by OSHA/EPA
An expensive but piss poor results US education system, which must be reformed with a re-emphasis on the basics and vocational training, as a quarter of the adult population is effectively illiterate and nearly half the population can barely read or write at a middle schooler level
